A Guided Tour of the Core Exhibition
The founding of Israel in 1948 was a turning point for Jews all over the world. The Jewish community in Germany in particular felt deeply connected to the new state. Against this backdrop, one room in the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of the relationship between Germany and Israel and the significance of this relationship for all Jews living in Germany.
The challenges of this triangular constellation - being involved in the fate of two states and their deeply strained relationship as a Jew in Germany - are once again coming to the fore in the aftermath of October 7, 2023.
In this context, the tour of the permanent exhibition follows two lines of development: the principle of holiness in diasporic Judaism, which is determined by a simultaneity of proximity and distance to the land of Israel, and the emergence of Zionism as a Jewish national movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries in the face of modern racial anti-Semitism. The tour concludes with a visit to Shalechet: Israeli artist Menashe Kadishman dedicated his walk-in sculpture of over 10,000 steel faces to all the innocent victims of war and violence.Translated with DeepL
