Jeanine Meerapfel is one of Germany’s most prominent filmmakers. In her films, she explores issues of flight, exile, identity, and memory—themes that have shaped her work for decades and remain relevant to this day. As the daughter of a Jewish family that was forced to flee to Argentina to escape Nazism, she intertwines her personal history with social and political issues.
To mark the publication of the new volume *Jeanine Meerapfel* in the *Film-Konzepte* series, film scholar Lea Wohl von Haselberg presents her exploration of the director’s life and work. The volume traces Meerapfel’s cinematic explorations of Latin America, the Federal Republic of Germany, family relationships, and the challenges of memory.
To complement this, we will screen the documentary *Adiòs AdK – die Präsidentin geht* by Christa Donner. The film follows Jeanine Meerapfel during her final days as president of the Academy of Arts and offers a personal glimpse into the life of one of the defining voices of German cinema.
In the subsequent discussion with Rolf Aurich from the Deutsche Kinemathek, Lea Wohl von Haselberg and Christa Donner will discuss Meerapfel’s work, her significance for film history, and the question of how cinema can make experiences of exile, loss, and belonging visible.
