"Tohuwabohu" is one of the first phrases in the Torah and describes the formless original state of the universe before creation. Long since established in German as "chaotic" or "jumbled", "Tohuwabohu" also became the title for Sammy Gronemann's successful novel about the various facets of Jewish life in Berlin at the turn of the 20th century. Today, it is a fitting title for our overview tour through the adventurous history of our house. We will trace an arc from the first opening of the gates and the visit of Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck to the destruction during the Second World War and the reconstruction around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Along the way, we meet courageous policemen, prophets and rabbis and trace stories that are literally inscribed in the walls and objects of the New Synagogue.
Meeting point: 11:00 a.m. in the cash desk area of the museum.
