Many Trees Do Not Make a (Rain) Forest—A Colonial Investigation into Plantations and Monoculture

The greenhouses offer a small glimpse of the enormous plant diversity found in the tropics and subtropics. Nowhere else are there as many species as in the Amazon region. Nevertheless, rainforest continues to be cleared for agricultural land to this very day. What does this have to do with colonialism? Plantation agriculture brought wealth to the European colonial powers, but in the colonies, biodiversity had to give way to monocultures.

The tour also explores how plantations developed after the formal end of colonialism and what consequences monocultural agriculture continues to have for biodiversity and the climate to this day.

Number of participants: max. 20 people

Target audience: Adults (recommended for ages 16 and up)

Participation fee: 6 eurosper person (plus admission)
