Winter Greetings from the Liebermann Villa with Gel Plate Prints on Postcards
The exhibition “On to New Works! Max Slevogt, Bruno Cassirer, and Max Liebermann” shows the diverse ways in which artists around 1900 experimented with drawing and printmaking for illustrated books. Together, we’ll discover how a single initial idea can give rise to ever-new images through various printing techniques.
In the family workshop, young and old alike can try their hand at gel plate printing and discover the many possibilities of this technique. Using colors, shapes, and textures, participants create unique prints in which leaves, flowers, and other finds from the garden become natural printing stencils, leaving fascinating marks on the paper.
In gel plate printing, ink is transferred to paper using a soft gel plate—without a printing press. Printing different layers of ink on top of one another creates surprising patterns and unique compositions. Each layer changes the image and makes every print one-of-a-kind.
The result is colorful artwork in which the textures and shapes of the garden are reflected in a very unique way, showcasing just how versatile printmaking can be.
Regular museum admission applies (free for children).
Participation in the workshop is included. Space is limited.
