"Nothing is so firmly believed as that which we know least," said a philosopher 500 years ago. Secret services have adopted this principle over the centuries. They purposefully spread rumors and lies about people they wanted to publicly expose, eliminate or denounce. In this way, opposition and resistance groups have been and continue to be smashed. The method is called "decomposition".

A hot potato about which little is known in intelligence services, at least in Germany today. However, the GDR's State Security had no problem with this method. Opposition groups, writers and recalcitrant critics of the system often had to suffer.

Wolfgang Schmidt, once a member of the State Security himself, has now written a book examining how this method was and is used in the past and present. Today, "operative psychology" also functions as "fake news", as a tried and tested instrument for creating enemy images. But is this all subversion? And what methods does the Office for the Protection of the Constitution actually use? Is subversion also part of the toolbox for protecting democracy? And how does parliament monitor the work of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution?
