After the horrors of the Holocaust, only a few Jews lived in the eastern sector of Berlin. Over the next few years, many emigrated abroad or to the West. But some returned from exile after the war for political and ideological reasons and settled in East Berlin to help build the socialist state. Still others tried as best they could to maintain a Jewish community in the religious sense. This tour provides insights into the phases of reconstruction, the influences and disappointments of the anti-fascist ideology and Judaism lived under an anti-religious state. We visit places where the small East Berlin Jewish community gathered between 1945 and 1990 and also show which Jewish places disappeared from public view. Many questions are raised on this tour: To what extent was it possible to lead a Jewish life in a religious sense in the GDR? We will get to know various Jewish personalities who played very different roles in the political and cultural life of the GDR and explore the question of the extent to which it was possible for them to live their Jewish identity within an areligious, socialist society, or to what extent they still saw themselves as Jews at all?
