Heinrich Bollandt: Erbprinz Erdmann August von Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1615–1651) – Porträt des Erbprinzen Erdmann August von Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1615–1651) von Heinrich Bolland

In 1810, the Hohenzollern Secret House Archive was moved from Kulmbach to Bamberg—which was now part of Bavaria—and in 1822, the ancestral gallery of the Franconian line, containing over 200 paintings, was transferred to Berlin. Both had established the almost legendary reputation of the margrave’s castle over the preceding centuries.
As early as the 16th century, Margrave Georg Friedrich had been collecting portraits of family members at Plassenburg Castle. After his death in 1603, Margrave Christian of Brandenburg-Bayreuth—a late-born son of the Brandenburg Elector Johann Georg—founded the younger Brandenburg-Bayreuth line and expanded the collection of paintings. His brother Joachim Ernst inherited the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach that same year.

The tour led by Kathrin Külow, head of the palace complex, provides an overview of the portrait gallery currently on display at the Grunewald Hunting Lodge, which features portraits from the 16th to the 19th centuries, brief information about the subjects, and insights into the evolution of princely portraiture.Translated with DeepL
