In February 2026, Berlin's infrastructure was attacked like never before. The extent was considerable. In the south-west of the city, electricity, heating and the entire IT system stopped working. The result was a day-long blackout in which thousands of Berliners had to survive in sub-zero temperatures. The attackers? The left-wing extremist "Volcano Group" has claimed responsibility. Analysts speak of strong evidence pointing towards Russia, which has been targeting our critical infrastructure for some time.

A reward of one million euros offered by Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt has not led to a breakthrough in the search for the perpetrators. In addition to the large-scale situation, there has been an increase in attacks and espionage in Europe - it is suspected that Russia or China are behind many of the incidents.

What needs to be done to effectively protect our critical infrastructure in the future? What concepts are being discussed to make our society safe from the increasing dangers? Berlin has become an example of a serious threat situation due to the current attack. A pattern for disruptive warfare, even across borders?
