THISISPAIN

THISISPAIN

For centuries, Western art has projected its own image onto Spain – romantic, exotic, misunderstood.

Hillel Kogan, an Israeli choreographer and contemporary dancer, enters the world of flamenco consciously as what he is: a stranger, a tourist. In dialogue with the Israeli flamenco artist Mijal Natan, a perceptive, often humorous exploration of clichés, boundaries and the question of who actually owns an art form emerges.

What is Spanish, what is Israeli? What is folklore, what is high art? And above all: is identity something you are – or something you perform? Kogan attempts to perform the Spanish. What emerges is more than a dance piece. It is an exploration of belonging, authenticity and the role we all play every day.
