Schönheit ist Nebensache

Schönheit ist Nebensache

"Beauty is incidental" (Schönheit ist Nebensache) is one of the instructions at the beginning of the fourth movement of Paul Hindemith's Sonata for solo viola Op. 25 No. 1. This could just as easily have come from Dore Hoyer, expressionist choreographer and author of the dance cycle "Afectos Humanos," with which Pol Pi has been working for the past ten years. Both works consist of five short, pure and expressive solos and were created under the suffering of totalitarian regimes.

Based on letters written by both artists, Pol Pi develops a dialogue between their voices and the political situation in Brazil under Bolsonaro. Words, music and movement combine to form an intimate, yet political trio. Since Lula's election in 2023 in his native country, Pol Pi has also sometimes invited a local artist to share the last movement of the sonata and the last dance, “Love” from the cycle.
