To mark Liberation Day on 8 May, the Foundation for Remembrance, Responsibility and the Future (EVZ) is inviting Berlin’s citizens to the Liberation Dance in memory of the victims of the Nazi regime. Together, we aim to send a message of freedom and solidarity, and to stand against hatred and incitement. The event is scheduled for Friday, 8 May at 5.30 pm as a large-scale choreographed display on Berlin’s Friedrichstraße, near Besselpark.
Experienced swing dancers will lead the flash mob; no prior experience or registration is required. Anyone wishing to prepare in advance can find a tutorial on the EVZ Foundation’s website.
History of Liberation Dance
Among the victims of National Socialism were also swing dancers and jazz musicians, who were persecuted by the Nazi regime because of their passion for jazz and swing. As a result of the regime’s racist and anti-Semitic stance, jazz music was banned as ‘degenerate music’. With the Liberation Dance, the EVZ Foundation wishes to commemorate the victims and those persecuted by the Nazi regime together with the people of Berlin, and to mark Liberation Day – which symbolises the end of Nazism and the liberation of Europe – in a participatory manner. Dancing the choreography together, holding hands and thereby building bridges, stands for solidarity.
