Every morning, they go to work. Walking itself is work. They all walk—some-where: in Nairobi to the matatu bus (shared minibus taxi), in Berlin to the subway station. Streams of people, dense flows of movement, carving their way through the urban jungle day after day.
Many try to avoid walking altogether, relocating their workplaces closer to home or creating new working arrangements in order to shorten or escape the daily commute.
The Kenyan-German dance production JUA KALI by Jared Onyango and Lea Pischke explores the everyday journeys of people in Nairobi and Berlin. It asks how political and urban conditions shape and transform such a fundamental human movement.
In JUA KALI, locomotion becomes a universal motif—caught between togetherness and solitude within the crowd.

Jared Onyango is an artist from Nairobi, Kenya, working across choreog-raphy, writing, photography, and sound. He trained at P.A.R.T.S in Brussels, Belgium, and at École des Sables in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal, between 2010 and 2019. His current research explores how built environments shaped by colonial legacies influence movement and human behaviour.
Trained in fine arts, experimental music, dance, and choreography, Lea Pischke works at the intersection of somatic practice, movement aesthetics, and the politics of space. As a performer and choreographer, she creates and tours internationally. Her recent film MmOTHERS, a collaboration with Russian-French composer Evgenii Lebedev, was presented at Radio France in 2025. She is a member of the Mobile Ensemble and a writer with the STREAM collective.
