Performance by Christoph Winkler

After a successful premiere in 2024 and multiple international performances, Christoph Winkler’s performance “Four Non Blondes” returns to the stage in Berlin. This production by the Christoph Winkler dance theatre company explores the various nuances and ambivalences surrounding blondness, including the cultural history and political significance of blonde hair.

Blonde hair emerged around 11,000 years ago as a genetic mutation in northern Europe. Only two percent of humanity are naturally blonde. It’s a rare phenomenon, which is why it has become a coveted attribute for some: Blonde hair is associated with youth, attractiveness, and purity. At the same time, it’s a symbol of whiteness, social aspiration, rebellion and self-determination. The meaning ascribed to blondness has gone back and forth over the centuries, depending upon the attitudes of different eras and societies.

“Four Non Blondes” is a choreographic concert in which four non blonde performers and a singer combine their personal experiences, elements of digital theatre and political narratives in order to cast a new light on the myth of blondness.
