Enad Marouf: ATHAR

In Arabic, the word for “trace” is “athar” which also means “ruin”. In this new work by artist and choreographer Enad Marouf the word “athar” refers to what remains, signifying that something no longer fully exists, a fragment. Athar does not take a singular form, it is both: a proof of absence and a remnant of existence.

In a similar way, the work revisits the 1960s and early 70s as a significant time of political change and marking the birth of liberation movements including the student uprisings across the globe. In many ways that era resembles ours in this current moment. Yet, the differences run deep. Back then a political imagination and a promise of the future felt possible—something that seems very difficult to imagine today. The performance seeks to bring audience and artists together as a collective in the theater: tracing a moment of time, space and loss—and at the same time the possibility of thinking together.
