The depression persists – but in a dream, the memory of his late grandfather appears and gives him a spark of hope.
Something begins reaching toward Ashley Temba — through images, fragments, memories. Visions surface like voices from another time. As the artist records them, a search begins to unfold: for balance, for closeness, for a way to no longer lose oneself.
Dream in Man traces the silent connection between Ashley and his late grandfather. Drawing from shared memories, unsent letters, and stories told by relatives, the work opens a dialogue about absence, inheritance, and the traces a life leaves within the body. Two people — two artists — the same path — separated by death and what remained unsaid.
Between dance and language, an intimate landscape of choreography, improvisation, and spoken fragments of private writings unfolds. Emotional states emerge not as narrative, but as movement: trembling, resistance, longing, exhaustion.
The work asks how art can become a place where forgiveness and healing remain possible — and whether self-love sometimes begins only when memory is allowed to live again.

Ashley Temba is a dancer, performer, and choreographer from Brooklyn, New York, based in Berlin. He embodies a performative approach rooted in a culture of direct expression — raw, rough, and honest. Following a residency at Tanzhaus Zürich under the direction of Tarren Johnson, he has presented work at Haus am Waldsee as well as the Museum Salzburg. Alongside his own artistic practice, he teaches as a lecturer at the Center of Dance. His recent projects include the performance Flight of the Canaries (2023) by Bishop Black, as well as his powerful solo portrait As I Want (2025) at Ballhaus Naunynstraße. Lea Bethke is a Berlin-based filmmaker, director, and intimacy coordinator. A self-taught artist, she creates her own films as well as commissioned work for institutions such as c/o Berlin, Sasha Waltz & Guests, and the Bode Museum. In 2020, she founded her production company Project Pomegranate (formerly Sinnefilm), through which she completed the award-winning dance film Until The Moon Is Born In The West in 2023. She is currently working on her feature-length documentary Malaka. Her work focuses on embodiment, female sexuality, and power-critical, transcultural narratives that contrast human vitality with social taboos and structures of violence.
