BANG! is a “loud”, rebellious duet performed by two women, set at the intersection of the street and the home, political tension and agency, anger and intimacy, surveillance and solidarity, control and trust. It is inspired by two acts: the banging of pots and pans as a transnational historical form of political protest, and “bed dancing”, which this performance proposes as a contemporary form of political processing and transformation.
The performance is a choreographic exploration and response to how the kitchen and the bed can be activated by feminist perspectives to develop political solidarity, stance and statements.
When expression of unease, outrage and dissatisfaction towards political authorities in public spaces are restricted, how can these public sentiments be processed and channelled? What does ‘bed’ mean in the absence of rest and comfort – and what can it provide in a socio-political crisis? What forms of protest can we develop when public demonstrations are criminalised and protesters face the threat of prosecution?
BANG! is created to explore the potential and limitations of non-violent forms of protest, whilst emphasising the need to strengthen transnational cooperation, interdependence and solidarity in times of global conflict and the rise of far right-wing populist politics.
