An Italian Hamlet? Yes, indeed: in the early 18th century, the Venetian poet Apostolo Zeno created his Ambleto, a libretto based on the story’s original medieval Danish source rather than the Shakespearean play. It was set to music multiple times, but none of the resulting operas has come down to us in its entirety. Roberta Mameli and the musicians of Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu have gathered some of the surviving fragments from libraries across Europe to present an unfamiliar take on the famed literary character.
