Kunal Lahiry & Freddie Ballentine - “Sei doch lieb, …”

A freewheeling operatic cabaret

Kunal Lahiry & Frederick Ballentine - “Sei doch lieb, …”
Pianist Kunal Lahiry and tenor Frederick Ballentine present “Sei doch lieb, …” a freewheeling operatic cabaret at Neue Nationalgalerie, staged in dialogue with the exhibition Ruin & Rush. Free of charge to all as part of Volkswagen Group Art4All.
Two friends, one chaotic night in Berlin: a mix of classical art song, cabaret, and contemporary Berlin humour. Lahiry and Ballentine weave together a transhistorical, multilingual selection of music centered on cabaret—the genre of performing art that reached an artistic and social peak during the Weimar Republic and is referenced by many works in the exhibition.
Alongside songs from the Weimar period, the two extend that spirit across different parts of the globe and into the present day. Featuring new interpretations of music by Spoliansky, Schumann, Berg, Bolcom, Schulhoff, and more. The two will also perform together at Konzerthaus Berlin on November 17, 2026.
Kunal Lahiry, an Indian-American pianist based in Berlin, is a former BBC New Generation Artist and 2021 recipient of the Carl Bechstein Foundation scholarship. He studied at McGill University and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, and specializes in art song and contemporary music, having premiered works by composers including Nico Muhly and Errollyn Wallen.
Frederick Ballentine, a tenor from Norfolk, Virginia, is the 2021 recipient of the Kennedy Center's Marian Anderson Award and an alumnus of the Washington National Opera's Cafritz Young Artists Program and LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program.

ELSA... moreabout: ELSA
