Published four centuries ago, Claudio Monteverdi’s Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi speak of love and war and have now become the inspiration for a new work by Cathy Milliken. In As War As Love, the Australian composer, who calls her piece an “oratorio per tre,” sets Renaissance poetry as well as texts by Wisława Szymborska, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Mahmoud Darwish, among others. Helena Rasker and Geneviève Strosser perform its world premiere at the Pierre Boulez Saal. The first part of their program features music Milliken wrote in preparation for her new piece alongside works by Jonathan Harvey, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Monteverdi.
