The program oscillates between a sense of new beginnings and stillness, between the familiar that slips away and the unfamiliar that gradually becomes one’s own. What it means to have no home in Schumann’s forests and yet to sing there—that is the unspoken question this evening poses.

Tenor Volker Nietzke, who hails from South Africa and lives in Berlin, brings an international perspective to the German art song tradition.

Xiaohui Li grew up in China and earned her artistic diploma at the Hamburg Conservatory—in the very heart of the city where the German art song has found a special home since the days of Brahms and Groth.
Xinmin Wanbao (Evening News of the New People) praised her as a soprano with “remarkable precision and artistic mastery.”
KaJeng Wong, originally from Hong Kong, is one of Asia’s most sought-after pianists—Martha Argerich called him “a special pianist,” and Claude Frank described him as the most talented musician of his generation.
