Berlin extends mask obligation on public transport until mid-January

The Berlin Senate has extended the existing Infection Protection Ordinance until mid-January 2023.

"This means we will also stick to the mask requirement on public transport at this time, as is planned in other German states," Berlin's governing mayor Franziska Giffey said after the Senate meeting on Tuesday.

Further deliberations in January

The current Coronavirus Protection Ordinance is set to expire December 21. According to Health Senator Ulrike Gote (Green Party), the ordinance has now been extended until January 17. Then the Senate will again discuss any changes, she said. The capital is thus taking a different path than, for example, the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria, which only recently lifted the mask requirement in their local transport systems.
