The state-owned housing companies in Berlin have significantly increased their portfolio in recent years. As of December 31, 2024, they had 365,161 apartments. That was 70,433 more than at the end of 2016, as Building Senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) announced.

This means that the six companies have already come close to the target set at the time of managing around 400,000 apartments by the end of 2026. The statistics do not include Berlinovo, another state-owned company, which has a special status and owns a further 30,000 apartments. This means that just under a quarter of Berlin's 1.7 million rental apartments are in municipal hands.

Portfolio growth in 2024 amounts to a total of 3525 apartments

According to Gaebler, the number of state-owned apartments grew by 3,525 last year, of which 3,461 were newly built. In addition, the construction of a further 4,070 municipal apartments in 25 new-build projects began. According to earlier information from the companies, 4,705 new apartments are to be completed over the course of this year, with the laying of foundation stones planned for a further 5,681 apartments. Gaebler also expects higher figures for 2026 than recently.
