Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner wants to permanently establish the German Computer Game Award in the capital.
"Berlin offers the best conditions for an event of this top class," explained the CDU politician two days before this year's award ceremony. "The heart of the German games industry beats here. The location has the most companies and the most dynamic growth."
Wegner pointed out that a central contact point for the industry would be created in Berlin with the House of Games. From 2026, large and small companies in the industry, start-ups and established companies, as well as cultural and educational institutions, will be able to set up shop here. The project aims to attract creative minds from all over the world to Berlin. The Senate Chancellery is funding the establishment of the House of Games in 2024 and 2025 with around five million euros each.
The next German Computer Game Award will be presented this Wednesday at a gala with 600 guests at the Palais am Funkturm - in 15 categories. The award is considered the most important prize in the games industry and has been awarded since 2009. Most recently, the award ceremony alternated between Munich and Berlin. Berlin has also applied for the 2026 edition. According to the state-owned company Berlin Partner, there are around 350 companies in the computer games industry in the capital with more than 4,000 employees. Most recently, they generated a total annual turnover of more than 400 million euros.
