Former Federal President Horst Köhler will be given an Ehrengrab (grave on honor) by the State of Berlin. This was decided by the Senate. Köhler died on February 1 at the age of 81. His grave is located in the Protestant St. Annen churchyard in Dahlem in the district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf.
As an outstanding representative of the Federal Republic of Germany, he earned a great deal of respect with his clear stance and called on people to courageously stand up for innovation, democracy and the cohesion of our society, the Senate Chancellery announced.
Former German presidents Walter Scheel, Richard von Weizsäcker and Johannes Rau also have graves of honor in Berlin. There are now a total of 686 such graves in the state of Berlin. In the case of graves of honor, the costs of grave care, maintenance of the grave and the gravestone are covered.
