The Mommsenstadion in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf is to be used as a training ground for this year's European Football Championships. The Senate Department for the Interior and Sport also announced on Friday that the stadium is to be made suitable for third division football.

The costs for the renovation will be borne by the state of Berlin. The budget funds are planned and available so that the measures can be implemented quickly, it said: "Training should then take place on the new green in the Mommsen Stadium by May 2024 at the latest."

Football association welcomes decision

In a statement, the president of the Berlin Football Association, Bernd Schultz, "expressly welcomed the agreement in favour of a short-term upgrade of the Mommsen Stadium to meet the requirements as a training facility for UEFA EURO 2024 and as a 3rd division venue". The move will provide Berlin clubs aiming for promotion to this division in the short or medium term with the necessary planning security until the stadium in Jahnsportpark is completed.
