The State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) has advised against swimming at four bathing spots. The reason is massive algae blooms.
The bathing spots affected are Lieper Bucht, Grunewaldturm, Kleine Badewiese in Spandau and Schmöckwitz. Due to the algae blooms, there are streaks and algae carpets there. Furthermore, the depth of visibility in the water is considerably reduced. This also makes it difficult to carry out rescues. Children in particular should not swim in murky waters with greatly reduced visibility and areas with visible green or blue-green streaks.
According to the Lageso, sensitive persons in particular must expect skin irritations and allergic reactions when swimming in affected waters. With high concentrations of algae, an increased concentration of blue-green algae and blue-green algae toxins must be expected. The Lageso recommends taking off bathing clothes immediately after bathing, showering off if possible and drying off vigorously with a hand towel.
