Berlin's Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action has pointed to high ozone levels in the city.
On Tuesday, ozone concentrations of more than 180 micrograms per cubic meter were measured at individual measuring points. Because the hot weather continues, high values are also possible on Wednesday afternoon, the Senate Department announced on Tuesday evening.
People who know themselves to be sensitive to ozone should refrain from vigorous physical exercise outdoors in the afternoon. During the summer weather, people in Berlin should also avoid driving if possible, because exhaust gases such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons contribute significantly to the formation of ozone, according to the Senate Department. This also applies to other combustion engines, such as those in motorboats and lawnmowers.
Simply spending time outdoors, for example for a picnic in the countryside, a walk or a swim in the pool, does not pose any danger. However, strenuous endurance sports should better be postponed to the morning or evening hours.
