Berlin Senate discusses housing supply

Baustelle

On the basis of a report on housing availability by Urban Development Senator Andreas Geisel, the Berlin Senate will discuss the situation on the Berlin housing market on Tuesday.

Due to a shortage of supply and rising rents, the Senate has set itself the goal of building an average of 20,000 new apartments per year, with the help of municipal, cooperative and private projects.

Number of apartments in state-owned companies to be increased

In addition, the strategy of targeted apartment purchases is to be continued in order to increase the number of apartments in state-owned companies. At present, these companies manage around one-fifth of Berlin's 1.7 million rental apartments. Another topic of discussion in the Senate is the current situation with regard to the energy crisis resulting from the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The government team will meet via video link.
