Berlin's economy recovers better than average

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Berlin's economy recovered significantly over the past year.

The capital's gross domestic product rose by 3.3 per cent in 2021, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office announced on Wednesday (March 30, 2022). This was more than the national average growth of 2.9 per cent. In the first year of the crisis, Berlin's economy slumped by 3.8 per cent. In light of the continuing effects of the pandemic, Berlin's Senator for the Economy Stephan Schwarz called the increase in economic output a "remarkable achievement by our companies and employees".

Large growth in the education and health sectors

According to the statistics, growth in the past year was driven by public services such as the education and health sectors. About half of the growth was due to these sectors, they said. Sectors that were particularly hard hit, such as transport, trade or the hospitality industry, also increased and grew by about three per cent. Nevertheless, economic output there was still 8.6 per cent below the previous year's level in 2019.
