Following the release of the stolen data from the Berlin municipal administration, the authorities plan to contact the individuals affected.
“If individual affected persons are identified during the analysis, they will be notified by the relevant Senate departments on a risk-based basis and in accordance with legal requirements,” according to a statement issued by the Senate Chancellery on Friday. Citizens who, independently of this, become aware “that their data has been published or is being used for criminal offenses such as fraud or identity theft should file a criminal complaint.”
According to the Senate Chancellery, security authorities are currently conducting a thorough review of the data. “IT forensic experts working on behalf of the State of Berlin are working around the clock to examine the published data. Appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings.”
The ultimatum issued by the hacker group Rhysida following its cyberattack on Berlin’s state network expired on Friday afternoon. According to experts, the entire dataset was published on the dark web. The group had previously demanded 30 bitcoins - equivalent to about two million euros. The Berlin Senate had previously made it clear that it would not give in to such extortion attempts.
