Just under two weeks after the Islamist terrorist attack on the outskirts of Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin, a new memorial site has been established. A new tree has been planted to replace the one that had to be cut down in the Tiergarten following the attack carried out with a car. Next to it, the Mitte District Office had a rainbow-colored bench installed.

The new maple tree at the crime scene is surrounded by a protective metal fence where people can attach cards, photos, flowers, and personal messages without damaging it. According to the district office, the bench is also intended to invite people to pause and offer silent condolences, as well as to express solidarity with the queer community.

Assassin drives into a crowd

During the terrorist attack on July 25, the Islamist assailant drove a van into a crowd of people and then crashed the vehicle into a tree. The 21-year-old then attacked additional people—presumably with a machete—before fleeing. One woman was killed, and 31 people were injured, some seriously. One day later, police shot and killed the attacker in Berlin-Spandau while attempting to arrest him.

Tiergarten as a Memorial Site for the Victims

At the scene of the attack near the Brandenburg Gate, people left flowers, wreaths, messages of condolence, and other messages in several places following the attack. To this day, many people come to the Tiergarten to come to terms with the attack and to commemorate the victims. The CSD-memorial is located at the site of the incident, near Bellevueallee and Ahornsteig.
