The Berlin Police Department is getting a new Forensic Science Institute (German: Kriminaltechnisches Institut (KTI)). It is being built at a cost of 190 million euros in Johannisthal on the site at Groß-Berliner Damm 78, according to Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD).

"The new building is essential for modern crime-fighting and security in the capital," she explained. The KTI's current building on Tempelhofer Damm in Tempelhof is no longer sufficient to meet the high demands of forensic work. Laboratory capacity and technical infrastructure are no longer adequate. Therefore, the new building is urgently needed. The funding for it comes from the federal government's Special Infrastructure Fund.
