Teachers in Berlin to receive significant support

Teachers at schools in Berlin are to have their workload reduced in future. This also applies to nursery teachers employed there.

An agreement on a package of measures to this effect was signed by Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU), Senator for Education, and the Berlin branch of the Education and Science Union (GEW) at the Rotes Rathaus. This was announced by the Senate Department for Education.

More support and planned investments

This includes, for example, increased support during the early years of schooling through new posts and smaller class sizes for schools in challenging areas. Plans also include a day off from teaching for learning progress meetings in primary schools and an additional hour of reduced teaching load for teachers from the school year following their 63rd birthday. In addition, further investment is planned to improve the working conditions of nursery teachers in all-day school care. The measures are set to come into effect gradually from the 2026/2027 school year.

Günther-Wünsch: Education remains a top priority, even in financially challenging times

Katharina Günther-Wünsch (CDU), Senator for Education, described the agreement as a clear signal that education remains a top priority for the Berlin Senate, even in financially challenging times. According to the education authorities, the full implementation of the measures will require additional funding of around 32 million euros.
