City cleaning service provides grit free of charge

Splitt-Ausgabe

A woman fills a bag with grit at the BSR depot on Mühlenstraße. Citizens can collect 10 litres of grit for spreading at various locations operated by Berlin's municipal cleaning services.

In view of the continuing winter weather, Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) is providing grit free of charge.

Berlin residents can fill buckets or other containers they bring themselves with grit for private use at seven BSR depots. According to the BSR, household quantities of up to ten litres will be dispensed, while stocks last.

No disposal of de-icing agents

BSR does not provide transport. The BSR cleaning depots are open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The depots in Forckenbekstraße in Wilmersdorf, Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain, Nobelstraße in Neukölln, Lengeder Straße in Reinickendorf, Kniprodestraße in Prenzlauer Berg, Ringbahnstraße in Tempelhof and Kronprizessinenweg in Grunewald are participating in the distribution of grit. However, the BSR does not supply de-icing materials such as road salt to third parties. The supplies are intended for its own legally prescribed tasks.

No grit at recycling centres

No grit is available at the recycling centres run by Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR). This was pointed out by BSR spokesperson Frauke Bank. The gritting material is only available free of charge at the seven depots mentioned above. "The recycling centres are the wrong place to go," Bank told the German Press Agency. "However, we are seeing Berliners turning up there and asking for grit."
