Black ice warning since Monday evening

Black ice

The weather has been somewhat milder in Berlin and Brandenburg since Monday. However, caution is still advised when driving or walking. A severe weather warning is in effect until Tuesday morning.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warned that conditions on the roads in Berlin and neighboring states could become dangerous starting Monday evening. Those using the S-Bahn trains should also expect possible disruptions. Weather-related repairs to railroad switches led to delays on Monday.

Snowfall turns to rain

Although it is gradually getting warmer, temperatures in many places dropped to double-digit sub-zero levels on Monday night. Light snowfall followed in the afternoon. With milder temperatures, the snow will first turn to rain in the southwestern half of Brandenburg and later in the northeast, which may freeze on the cold ground and lead to black ice. Caution is therefore still advised on the roads on Tuesday morning. The DWD issued a severe weather warning for Berlin due to slippery conditions. This warning is valid from Monday, 11 p.m., until Tuesday, 8 a.m. Severe weather warnings are also in effect in numerous districts and cities in Brandenburg due to the high risk of slippery conditions.

Some parks and gardens remain closed

Due to the black ice warning, the parks of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg will remain closed to avert danger to visitors, according to a statement by the foundation. The Botanical Garden in Berlin will also remain closed until 12 noon on Tuesday.
