The Berlin municipal cleaning service (BSR) plans to use thousands of tons of grit this winter to keep the capital's roads free of ice.
The gritting depots hold stocks of around 13,000 tons of salt, 2,100 cubic meters of brine, and 5,000 tons of grit, according to the company. Winter road maintenance is carried out by around 2,300 employees with 540 snowplows and gritting vehicles.
The BSR considers itself well prepared for the coming winter period and, according to its own statements, is responsible for roadways and pedestrian crossings, bike paths, bus stops, and certain squares and pedestrian zones. However, residents and homeowners are responsible for sidewalks, trash cans, and private roads.
Car and bicycle drivers should adapt their driving style to the weather conditions, allow winter service vehicles to pass quickly, and show consideration for each other. Drivers must use winter tires or all-weather tires in winter road conditions. The BSR provides information about major operations on the short message service X.
