The Museum of Comfort Women addresses the suffering of tens of thousands of Asian women who were abducted during World War II and forced into sexual slavery in Japanese military brothels.

They were called "comfort women," but that term is a euphemism. In Berlin, the Korea Association's Museum of Comfort Women (German: Museum der Trostfrauen) commemorates their history.

Interactive and multimedia exhibition

The museum sees itself as a place of learning and remembrance. The interactive exhibition is aimed at teenagers and adults and documents the history of the comfort women. In particular, it addresses the years of silence endured by those affected and the arduous journey to break that silence. Furthermore, the museum places the brutal comfort women system of World War II within the global context of sexual violence.

Tens of thousands of victims during World War II

According to historians' estimates, tens of thousands of girls and women were taken to frontline brothels - primarily in Japan - during World War II. They came from Korea, China and other Asian countries. To this day, Japan and South Korea remain at odds over how to address this crime.
