The James-Simon-Gallery was opened on 12 July 2019 in the presence of German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). The
Pergamon Museum can currently be reached directly through the 134 million euro building via an entrance on the upper floor and the Neues Museum, which is connected to the basement.
The building was named after the entrepreneur and art collector James Simon (1851-1932) by the British star architect David Chipperfield. Berlin's museums owe some 10,000 objects to his donations. These include the famous bust of Nefertiti, the main wife of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten from the 14th century BC.
