The Museum Berlin Modern, scheduled to open in 2030, is intended to showcase the National Gallery’s globally unique collection on a scale befitting its significance.
The planned Museum of 20th-Century Art is to be built next to the Neue Nationalgalerie at the Kulturforum, near Potsdamer Platz. The museum will house the public collections of classical modernism as well as several private collections.
The Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron is set to build the Museum of Modern Art between the Berlin Philharmonic and the Neue Nationalgalerie. The Basel-based team won the design competition together with Vogt Landscape Architects from Zurich, as Hermann Parzinger, then-president of the Prussian Foundation, and Monika Grütters, Minister of State for Culture, announced on October 27, 2016, following the jury’s decision.
The answer is: neither. The new museum is currently often referred to in the media as the "Museum of Modern Art." However, this term is incorrect. In Germany, "Modernism" refers to a specific historical period that does not necessarily correspond to the National Gallery’s exhibition plans. According to the State Museums of Berlin, even the currently used designation "Museum of the 20th Century" is only a temporary solution until the final title is decided.
