The Rummelsburg Information and Memorial Center tells the story of Germany's largest workhouse and the East Berlin prison on Hauptstraße.

The open-air exhibition at the Rummelsburg Memorial Site (German: Gedenkort Rummelsburg) has been open since January 2015. A combination of information panels and content from an app guides visitors through the history of the workhouse and prison. Through 18 biographies of former inmates of the building, the exhibition covers the period from the German Empire to the Peaceful Revolution.

Rummelsburg during the Nazi era and the GDR era

In the 19th century, inmates at the workhouse were required, among other things, to do spinning work and operate a treadmill. Under National Socialism, the building complex served as an institution for "asocials" - a term coined in Nazi jargon. In 1941, all 30 Jews imprisoned there were murdered. In the GDR, the site became East Berlin's central men's prison.
