View of a model of the "Great Hall" in the north-south axis of the planned "World Capital Germania" by Nazi architect Albert Speer in the history exhibition "Mythos Germania" by Berliner Unterwelten e.V. in Berlin.

Beneath the streets of Berlin, another world is waiting to be discovered. The Unterwelten Museum is dedicated to the capital's underground on four subterranean floors.

The underground part of Berlin reveals a lot about the history of the capital. It is not just the dark chapters of the city that are illuminated - visitors to the Berliner Unterwelten Museum (Berlin Underworlds Museum) come across one or two exciting and amusing anecdotes. For example, not many people know that long before the subway network, a pneumatic tube communication network was in operation beneath the city for 111 years. The museum cat Gesundbrunnen subway station an only be visited in combination with a guided tour called Tour 1 "Dark Worlds".

Of wars, breweries and subway railroads

Sewage system, subway and underground pipes: Even today, the smooth functioning of a city depends on underground processes. This was all the more true during the war, when the population could seek shelter from bombs in underground bunkers. The Unterwelten Museum provides an insight into the mostly invisible world beneath our feet. Six main themes are covered over four floors: Civilian air raid protection during the Second World War, forced labor in Berlin, pneumatic tube systems, GN Bahn, breweries and modern archaeology.

Permanent exhibition: Myth of Germania

The permanent multimedia exhibition Mythos Germania (Myth of Germania) deals with Hitler's plans to turn Berlin into the "World Capital Germania". Albert Speer's detailed plans show that these were by no means dreams or vague ideas. The Underworlds Museum places the planned construction projects in the context of the crimes that would have been necessary to implement them: Forced labor, deportation and displacement.

Ulterwelten Musem: Highlights

Some special exhibits bear witness to significant events in Berlin. The C. Lorenz AG forced labor file, for example, is a reminder of the more than 500,000 forced laborers who were forced to work in Berlin during the Nazi era. Finds and photographs from the "driver's bunker", a bunker complex only discovered in 1990, are another highlight. Railroad enthusiasts will enjoy the original front of the BII railcar 132, a subway train that was in use in the 1970s.
