The Bauhaus Archive presents the most comprehensive collection on the Bauhaus in a building designed by Walter Gropius.
The name says it all: the Bauhaus Archive / Museum for Design (German: Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung) documents the development of the Bauhaus as well as the works, life and work of famous Bauhaus personalities. With the help of photographs, documents, works, drawings, films, furniture, sculptures, paintings and more, visitors can experience the breadth of the famous art school.
The heart of the collection is Walter Gropius' estate. The founder of the Bauhaus left his private estate to the museum - other Bauhaus members followed his example. The permanent exhibition includes works by Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feinigner, Oskar Schlemmer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Herbert Bayer, Lucia Moholy and Georg Muche. In addition, the Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design regularly hosts temporary exhibitions that highlight a specific aspect of the Bauhaus.
The museum building not only houses the Bauhaus archive, but is also the museum's largest exhibit. It was designed by Walter Gropius and adapted by Alex Cvijanovic and Hans Bandel for the conditions in Berlin. It has been a listed building since 1977. The Bauhaus Archive has been undergoing renovation since spring 2018. The building is being renovated in line with its listed status and extended with a new building. The construction work is scheduled to take several years.
Due to the construction work, the Bauhaus Archive is temporarily located at Knesebeckstraße 1 near Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Charlottenburg as the Temporary Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung. In addition, the construction site information center "The Bauhaus View" has been providing information about the future of the museum on two floors since mid-July 2022. Visitors can learn exciting facts and background information about the construction project and take a look at the current construction progress from the roof terrace. An architectural model shows what the future museum will look like.
