The fall of the Berlin Wall, artistic freedom, anarchy and techno: the multimedia exhibition shows the wild and colourful Berlin of the 1990s. The decade that began in Berlin with the fall of the Berlin Wall had a lasting impact on the city. Nineties Berlin captures this turbulent time with a multimedia exhibition and shows the traces of the 90s with real parts of walls, sculptures and interactive elements.

The 90s in Berlin: Fall of the wall and free spaces

After unification, the city was in a chaotic and anarchistic mood. The population experienced new freedoms, but also new problems. Capitalism and economic change dissolved existing structures and led to a radicalisation of society. But new spaces for art and culture were also created.

Loveparade, sub- and club culture

One of the phenomena of this time was the techno festival Loveparade, the number of visitors jumped from a few hundred to over a million. Happy, carefree and connected by techno, the visitors danced through the city. Berlin's art scene experienced a similar upswing: young artists got together and freed themselves from economic constraints. Discarded industrial halls became clubs and in Berlin's backyards galleries sprouted like mushrooms from the ground.
