Day of German Unity Celebrations

Day of German Unity

The popular celebration of German Unity Day has not taken place since 2020.

October 3 was designated a public holiday as German Unity Day in the Unification Treaty of 1990. As a German national holiday, it commemorates German reunification. Since 1990, the official celebration of German Unity Day has usually taken place in the capital of the federal state that holds the presidency of the Bundesrat at that time. The official state ceremony is usually followed by a public celebration. In 2025, Saarland will host the celebrations in Saarbrücken.

Historical Significance of the Day of Germany Unity

The fall of the Berlin Wall on the 9th of November in 1989, which marked the end of the Cold War, had paved the way for German reunification barely a year later. The Unification Treaty that was signed on the 20th of September in 1990 and declares the 3rd of October the national holiday, sealed the end of the division of Germany.
