Jewish Berlin
In Berlin the long tradition of Jewish religion, Jewish culture and Jewish lifestyle was once visible in many places - and is celebrating a revival. Where to find old and new traces of Jewish life in Berlin. more
The imposing Rykestraße Synagogue is one of the most beautiful and original synagogues in Berlin.
The Rykestraße Synagogue is located in Prenzlauer Berg and is one of the best-preserved synagogues in Berlin. The synagogue is impressive both inside and out and was inaugurated in 1904.
The brick building of the Rykestraße Synagogue can only be seen in its full beauty when you look through two wide gateways. Visitors are greeted by a neo-Romanesque basilica that once held 2000 people. The architect of the synagogue, which was inaugurated in 1904, was Johann Hoeniger. The fact that the synagogue is so well preserved is thanks to a police commander who quickly called for a fire engine during the Reichspogromnacht so as not to endanger the surrounding residential buildings.
The synagogue was carefully restored in 2007. After the reopening, it shines in new splendor, but the interior can only seat 1200 people. Not far from the synagogue is the Jewish Cemetery on Schönhauser Allee. Important Jewish personalities have found their final resting place here.
