The Mariendorf harness racing track was once Germany's most modern equestrian sports facility. Even today, you can still bet on the hopefully right horse in races.
Opened in 1913 by the harness racing club Mariendorf e.V., the Trabrennbahn Mariendorf (Mariendorf harness racing track) now covers an area of 24 hectares after several renovations and modernizations. In addition to the 1,200 meter long competition track and a training track in the inner ring, the grounds include two closed grandstand buildings and an open grandstand for a total of 8,000 spectators. The Mariendorf Racecourse is one of Berlin's three horse racing tracks, the others being Karlshorst and Hoppegarten.
The open "Endell'sche Tribüne", named after its designer August Endell and now a listed building, offers space for around 2,000 spectators. The first of the two closed grandstand buildings was constructed in the years 1944 to 1946. The five-storey modern main building with a glass façade was completed in 1972 and, in addition to seats for 4,000 spectators and betting counters, contains catering facilities, an event hall and technical facilities.
Since 1952, the German Trotting Derby, organized by the Mariendorf Trotting Club, has been held once a year on the last day of Derby Week at the Mariendorf trotting track. The "Battle for the Blue Riband" is the most important trotting race for three-year-old horses bred in Germany and attracts many spectators.
