  The film “Mambo Materinca” kicks off the 2026 Achtung Berlin film festival.

This film festival for new German cinema presents current works by Berlin and Brandenburg filmmakers for one week in several Berlin cinemas.

A total of around 70 feature and documentary films as well as medium-length and short films will be shown. Six world premieres and one German premiere will be screened in the feature film competitions, while all other films in the competition will celebrate their Berlin premieres. The "Berlin Highlights" section presents feature films that are formally characterized by their own signature style, take an unusual perspective or deal with a particularly controversial topic.

Opening film 2026: Mambo Maternica

The 22nd edition of the film festival will kick off with Borbála Nagy's film Mambo Maternica at the Colosseum in Prenzlauer Berg. The film tells the story of three women in Paris, Budapest, and Berlin who are at turning points in their lives and are grappling with social expectations and questions of self-determination.
