Every other year, more than 100 museums, galleries and other venues in Berlin present photographic art at the largest photo festival in Germany, the European Month of Photography.

In 2025, the European Month of Photography will take place for the 11th time. The motto of Germany's largest photo festival this time is "What stands between us" and focuses on political tensions and the fragility of democratic values.

EMOP 2025: Festival center in the Academy of Arts

For the 11th edition of EMOP, a festival center is set up for the first time at the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) on Hanseatenweg. The festival center offers its own extensive program with talks and discussions and is the starting point for the numerous offers in the city. The entire second floor of the Akademie der Künste will be transformed into a showcase for contemporary photography during this period.

EMOP Opening Days

From 27 February to 2 March 2025, the EMOP Opening Days take place at the Festival Center in the Akademie der Künste. In addition to the festive opening of the festival, these three days include talks with the artists and panel discussions on the leitmotif "What stands between us".

The EMOP special "Young Scene" is also on the agenda, in which six renowned educational institutions in the field of photography present various up-and-coming artists. Another highlight of the first festival weekend is the numerous exhibition openings of the partner institutions, which take place throughout Berlin.

European Month of Photography: Highlights 2025

With over 100 items, photo fans quickly lose track. Selected highlights (editorial selection):

  • The exhibition "FOTOGAGA. Max Ernst and Photography" at the Museum of Photography highlights the points of contact between Max Ernst's art and photography for the first time. Portraits that show his playful side illustrate his innovative use of photography and collage.
  • The German Museum of Technology Foundation presents the exhibition "The Living City", which aims to show that a city is more than just a collection of houses and streets, but a diverse place of encounter. It connects and divides at the same time.
  • With his series "Nothing Personal" at the Koschmieder Gallery, Nikita Teryoshin takes a look behind the scenes of the global arms trade and shows pictures taken at international arms fairs.
  • At the Galerie Thomas Fischer, Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya shows pictures from divided Berlin that capture the atmosphere and everyday life of this formative period in a unique way.
  • In Parallel Realities at the Kommunale Galerie Berlin, around 30 international artists show a variety of works that convey a fragmented version of reality and encourage people to reflect on their own reality.
  • The Jewish Museum is showing the exhibition "German Jews Today" by the American photographer Leonard Freed, who traveled through West Germany for several months in the early 1960s to counteract the Germans' ignorance about the invisible Jewish minority in the country.
  • The first solo exhibition by Ayoung Kim can be seen at the Hamburger Bahnhof. It covers the last five years of her artistic work, which is characterized by artificial intelligence, virtual reality and simulations.
