On Levetzowstraße in Berlin-Moabit, the Levetzowstraße Memorial commemorates the deportation of Jews.

Until 1955, a synagogue stood on the site where the Levetzowstraße memorial stands today. In the 1940s, the Nazis misused it as a collection point for Jews prior to their deportation.

Levetzowstraße Synagogue misused as a collection camp

The synagogue of the same name stood on Levetzowstraße until 1955. Inaugurated in 1914, it had to be demolished 41 years later due to damage caused by air raids. From October 1941 onwards, the Nazis used the Jewish place of worship as a collection center for the deportation of Jews to ghettos, concentration camps, and extermination camps. Today, the Levetzowstraße memorial, consisting of a freight car and a large iron wall, commemorates the deported Jews at the same location.

Annual commemoration on November 9

The memorial was designed by Jürgen Wenzel, Peter Herbich, and Theseus Bappert, and was completed and inaugurated on November 14, 1988. The dates of a total of 63 transports to Eastern Europe and their destinations are immortalized on the high iron wall. On a ramp leading up to the wagon stands an abstract group of prisoners, symbolizing the many Jewish people who were deported from here to Central and Eastern Europe.

A memorial service is held every year on November 9 at the Levetzowstraße memorial.
